Saint Theophanes the Confessor of Sygriani

orthodoxia.online
Mar 12, 2020 Blog Comments Off on Saint Theophanes the Confessor of Sygriani

It is celebrated on March 12 of each year

Saint Theophanes the Confessor was born in 760 AD. from pious and God-loving parents, Isaac and Theodoti. At the age of eight he was orphaned by his father and his mother undertook the difficult task of raising, educating and educating the son of Theophanos.

Osios, at the request of his mother, married at a young age the pious and wealthy Megalo. This marriage, which was contrary to the solitary life desired by Osios, was dissolved. His wife, on the other hand, became a nun in the monastery of Prigipou and was renamed Irene, while Osios fled, in 781 AD, to a monastery near the mountain of Sygriani, Polichnio. (Sygriani was either in Medea or – more likely – in Mytilene [Cape Sigri]).

From this monastery, as a learned and virtuous monk, he was invited together with other eminent abbots, the abbot of the monastery Sakoudion Platonas, the monks Nikiforos and Nikitas from the monastery of Midiki, the monk Christopheros from the monastery of Mikros Agros, to the Seventh Ecumenical Synod of Nice, in the year 787 AD.

When he returned, he installed the monk Stratigios as abbot and he retired to the opposite island of Kalonymon, where he founded a large monastery and there, after being abandoned for six years, he engaged in calligraphy and writing. But unfortunately his health was affected by acute lithiasis. In this poor state, he did not fail to go to Constantinople, when he was invited by Leo the Armenian (813 – 820 AD), who tried through Patriarch Joseph the iconoclast to attract him to the heresy of iconoclasm.

Of course, the Holy One could not accept such a proposal and betray the Orthodox faith. So they shut him up in a dark place and then exiled him to Samothrace, where after twenty-three days he slept in peace in the year 815 (or according to others in 818 AD). Later his disciples moved his holy relics in the year 822 AD, to his monastery, where his Synaxis was held, as well as the Great Church.
